CHAPTER NINETEEN
ZAC
As soon as the words of her real future left Marco’s lips I could see the realisation hit her in her beautiful face. I could see the soul within her eyes crumble around her and my hard, stone-like, heart broke for her.
What is she doing to me? I know what’s at stake and what it would mean to me and everyone else, but hearing the words. It is as if I finally realise what was going to happen to the poor girl caught in the middle of this web. No one deserves that fate, no one. Well, maybe Marco and his son do, but I can’t help but think of a better fate for them both.
As soon as we are out of the basement Mark and I watch as Marco gets into his car. His whole body is stiff, reeking of his own importance the bastard. No words are spoken between us, but I can sense everything that Marco wants to portray to us with his eyes. Get her ready and don’t fuck it up.
His black SUV drives away, leaving a cloud of smoke in its wake and then Mark just turns around to look at me.
“If he gets to go out so do I. I’ve been here long enough.” He says like it’s all my fault and just like his father I watch as he drives away. As soon as the car is away in the distance I go back into the house and make my way back down to the basement, stopping off at the kitchen first.
I need to see her.
I need to check on her with my own eyes with no one else around to watch me and question everything that I do. She’s doing something to me and I have no idea what her power is and I need to try and fight it. So much is at stake and I can’t allow myself to fail. This isn’t just about me, this isn’t just about her, this is so much more than that and I have to remember that even though she tries to scream at me to help her. I get to the door and get the keys out; the poor girl is in irons but Mark insists that the door remain locked at all times. I place the key back into my pocket and as I open the door it creaks with annoyance. I go in slowly, really taking in everything around me for the first time. The smell of fear and anger looms around me like a plague attacking everything inside me. How can she stand to be in here and still show so much strength? She has no choice, that’s how, you idiot. The cell door closes with a loud bang and the girl is still strung up like a piece of meat shuddering in fear as she tries to look at me through those long lashes. She looks so beautiful, so defiant as she hangs there waiting for me or either one of the other two.
